8 On-the-Go Snacks Perfect for After School

Kids are hungry at the end of the school day, that’s for sure!

Instead of stopping for fast food, bring a healthy homemade snack!

Many snacks can be made in bulk, frozen or kept in the pantry or refrigerator and pulled out to when you go to pick up your kids, wait for them at the bus stop or gather together at the end of school and work.

The snacks are good for kids and grownups alike. We all reach a low spot in the afternoon. While sugar gives us a buzz, the slower release of energy from a healthy snack will last until dinner time.

Use leftover yogurt containers or zip-lock bags as a snack container. If the snacks are going to be in the heat, bring a small cooler to make sure the food remains fresh.

8 On-the-Go Snacks

  1. Avocado halved and pitted, served in the shell and sprinkled with salt

  2. On-the-Go Granola Bars

  3. Trail Mix

  4. Cut up veggies, such as baby carrots, celery, bell peppers, broccoli florets or cherry tomatoes, with humus, ranch dressing or peanut butter

  5. Melon chunks or grapes

  6. Apple slices with cinnamon (great flavor and hides any discoloration)

  7. Smoothies

  8. Sandwiches or wraps: try peanut butter and jelly; humus with avocado, tomato slice and lettuce or your favorite filling
